Dalai Lama

Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama is in Chicago this weekend. His arrival has me thinking about films about the Dalai Lama and Buddhism.

This year a documentary narrated by Harrison Ford called the Dalai Lama Renaissance will be released. It is about the Dalai Lama meeting with western thinkers such as quantum physicists Fred Alan Wolf and Amit Goswami (from the documentaries What the Bleep Do We Know and The Secret), social scientist Jean Houston, and founder of Agape International Spiritual Center church in Los Angeles, Dr. Michael Beckwith.

My favorite film about the Dalai Lama is Martin Scorsese’s Kundun. The film begins with the search for the 14th incarnation of the Dalai Lama. It follows him through adulthood and his troubles with Mao and China. A beautiful and moving film, coincidently, written by Melissa Mathison, Harrison Ford’s ex-wife.

Seven Years in Tibet is an overlooked film, I think. Perhaps it is because audiences couldn’t wrap their heads around Brad Pitt and Buddhism in the same film. It is based on the true story of Heinrich Harrer, an Austrian mountain climber who became friends with the Dalai Lama at the time of China’s takeover of Tibet.

Because I am a dumb sophomoric guy who loves playing golf, when I think of the Dalai Lama in film, I think of Caddyshack and Bill Murray’s story about caddying for “the Lama.”

So I jump ship in Hong Kong and make my way over to Tibet, and I get on as a looper at a course over in the Himalayas. A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.”

“So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.”

Adrienne Shelly

This week, Waitress, written and directed by Adrienne Shelly is being released. Years ago I knew her, as Adrienne Levine. This was before she became famous as an independent film actress, writer and director. Waitress is getting good reviews and premiered this year at the Sundance Film Festival. I look forward to seeing it.

The last time I saw Adrienne was in the late 90s. She was in town for the Chicago Film Festival. I was visiting a mutual friend in the lobby of the hotel hosting the festival and she bounced into the lobby all happy and go lucky. She reminded me of Holly Golightly without the darkness.

This past Christmas I was watching Turner Classic Movies and between films they ran a tribute to actors who died during calendar 2006. There was Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Jan Wyatt, Don Knotts and then Adrienne Shelly. I was shocked and saddened. I did not know she had died.

On November 1, 2006 she was murdered by a 19-year-old man who was working in a nearby apartment after Adrienne complained about the noise he was making. The whole story is much worse and it’s not worth repeating here.

Adrienne Shelly was married to Andrew Ostroy and had a two-year-old daughter named Sophie. Her husband created the Adrienne Shelly Foundation to support women filmmakers. Please visit the web site and see Waitress. http://www.adrienneshellyfoundation.org/

Veoh

My friend Stephan works for an internet company called Veoh which is making strong inroads in the realm of TV on the internet. I am curious about it so we did a little e-mail Q&A. Check Veoh out for yourself at http://www.veoh.com/

There will be more on Stephan in future posts. Before he wised up and stopped working with me (he was the cinematographer of all of my college films, my feature, Victimless Crimes and all of the Denny Dent commercials) Stephan was the best young director of photography I have ever seen. He saved my film butt on many occasions and we always had a blast doing it. Among other adventures- stuck in a blizzard on Thanksgiving eve, among them- from 1985-1987 we would drive all night to get to the Kentucky Derby, hang out in the infield and drive back to Chicago. We won big with Spend A Buck and Ferdinand. The other year the weather was nice, I am sure.

Cutaways

In 1999 our TV commercial business was hamstrung by a Screen Actors Guild strike. Looking for work, we were offered the opportunity to make a promotional film for The Chase House, a Chicago area not-for-profit, which worked in the inner city and helped families in need. The client hammered out a rough script and it was pretty much what one would expect of a typical fund-raising promotional video, people talking about how great they are and how much they help the communities they served. All of which is very nice, but painfully dull. When we looked at the script it was probably 75 percent talking head interview, 15 percent graphical statistics and maybe 10 percent moving pictures. To us this was all backwards and we accepted the job only if we could make some changes to their script.

We decided to shoot this promotional film as a pure documentary. We would show the good works they did, loose the statistics completely and tell the story with pictures. Our interview subjects would push the narrative along with the answers to our questions. Ideally, we hoped to not even use a voice over person, though it turned out there was too much historical information and hard facts that needed to be presented concisely to do that. The result is what we call an Infomentary- part informational, part documentary and NO part “industrial” or “corporate” film. Our goal was to make the film interesting to watch, believing, if we could get viewers hooked on the images, it would help open up their checkbooks. Sure enough it did. Recently we showed the film to a perspective new client, and years later it holds up.

The only reason we could make the film in this style was that we shot lots, LOTS of cutaway footage. Cutaways are those scenes (or even still pictures) that you use to cut away from a subject. In film you often cut away from an interview subject to condense a story or to make the subject sound better. Recently we were editing and by using a cutaway were able to change someone from speaking in the present tense, to speaking in the past tense by substituting the word “was” for the word “is.” We were only able to do this because we had images to cutaway to.

One of the scenes in the film mentioned above was shot at an HIV/AIDS respite facility. Located in a church on Chicago’s west side, a minimal staff ran daycare and head start programs, provided respite for families dealing with HIV/AIDS, ran a monthly food distribution program and held art therapy sessions for families in need. The day we shot was in the middle of summer, maybe 90 degrees outside and it was the one day a month all of these programs occurred at the same time. We got to the location in the morning and shot all day. Late in the afternoon we did an interview in the stifling church sanctuary with the art therapist- who also ran the food distribution service. He was tired, sweaty and exhausted. If time and budget not been a concern would should have come back another day for his interview, but instead we went forward. Very quickly it was clear he was worn out; every other word he spoke was “Uh” or “You know.” We were very concerned, but at this point had committed and we felt we could save it in the editing room because we knew we had really great cutaways to choose from.

Cut to a month later. We screen the film for the client. They love it. Mr. Art Therapy came up to us and told us how much better he came off than he thought he would. It was all due to the cutaways. Food on Film

Marcel Proust can have his madeleines, I have food on film. I found myself thinking the other day about films where food is integral to the story and it made me hungry. So I have come up with a list of films where food and eating is a key part of the film. This is a work in progress so feel free to add your own suggestions. I have confined my list to narrative films. This of course eliminates the best food film- Baking Bread a documentary by my favorite Sicilian, Rose Spinelli. Here is my list by cuisine. The films, as well as the food, should be good.

American
Soul Food– The title says it all.
Diner– It’s ABOUT the roast beef sandwich.
Dinner Rush– Just like working in a popular restaurant. Directed by a man who owns a restaurant.

Chinese
Eat Drink Man Woman-Directed by Ang Lee. Tortilla Soup is the much inferior re-make.

German
Mostly Martha- Another film set in a working kitchen.

Greek
My Big Fat Greek Wedding-This film only made my list because of the food, Somehow Zorba the Greek didn’t seem to fit.

French
Babette’s Feast –French food, Danish film.
Chocolat- We can’t forget dessert.

Italian
Big Night – The sine qua non of food films. Everyone involved with the film must have been a foodie. This is a great film for lots of reasons, but none better than the line, “The pasta- sometimes she wants to be alone.” (Say it aloud with an Italian accent.)
The Godfather – One could argue the film is about food. Count how many references to food there are vs. how many mentions of the “mafia?” Also, anytime someone is killed and the next line is “Leave the gun, take the cannoli,” you know the film is about food.

Japanese
Lost in Translation – Perhaps a stretch, but the film so immerses us into Japan, that you have to include it. Also, the scenes where Bill Murray shoots the commercial for whiskey are priceless. I hope my directorial manner is better than that commercial director. Also, how different would U.S. culture be if we could advertise for hard liquor on TV? Dale Earnhardt Jr. for Jack Daniels anyone?

Mexican
Like Water for Chocolate– You will be hungry and amorous after seeing the film.

Scottish.
Local Hero– A wonderful film. You really get a sense of how other cultures look at the land and animals. Peter Riegert brings an injured rabbit to his inn. The next time he sees it it’s on his plate as Lapin a La Cocotte.

I want to add my own madeleine to this list. The In-Laws with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin.
There are a lot of food scenes and references- the dinner when the two families meet, (tse tse flies with beaks), Vince and Shelley driving backwards down the road as Vince reminisces about a chicken salad sandwich on a hard roll with a large orange juice ‘You know the grande?’ The Guacamole Act of 1917. But the food scene, to me, is the Pea Soup scene.

After Arkin (Shelley) has been chased down the street (but before he learns how to serpentine) and Falk (Vince) are eating in a diner. Shelley has ordered split pea soup but isn’t eating it. Vince takes some and says, “A little greasy but very good. Crumble up some crackers to absorb the grease,” You need to see it.

I cannot eat pea soup without thinking of Vince and Shelley and my dad.

Lesson Learned

In a post last week I mentioned my student, Andrew, was part of a team of four Columbia filmmakers participating in the National Film School Championships in San Diego. I saw Andrew Friday and he filled me in on the outcome.

All 20 teams were given a script last Wednesday night and had until 9am Saturday morning to deliver a five-minute film. Andrew’s team read the script and immediately rejected it and decided to make their own film instead. I think this was a good plan. I believe if you can deliver something good and audiences like it- even if it goes against the rules- then you win even if you lose. What is the point of trying to make a film if you know it is going to be bad? You might as well make a film you think is going to be good and let the chips fall where they may. I think this rule applies to any creative competition or business pitch. Go with the best idea you have, not necessarily the idea you were told to come up with. (Is this what is called thinking outside the box?)

Andrew’s film was about a man in a banana suit. There must be a glut of banana suit costumes out there because this is the third banana suit concept I have heard in the last two weeks. Andrew reports they shot it and it was pretty good. They cut it together on Friday night and if nothing else it wass funny, the team liked it and they felt the audience will like it.

Then disaster struck. Deciding to make one final tweak (the enemy of good is better- an earlier Filmmaking101 post) their external hard drive crashed and they lost everything. The organizers extended the deadline for them- which tells me they liked the film too- but it was gone. No film. That evening at the screening Andrew said that their film probably would have won. It had the best production values and it was funny. Of course a key part of winning the contest is actually entering the contest. Sorry Andrew.

Upon further discussion, I discovered their fatal flaw. They were shooting with the HD camera pictured above. They put the HD files into their external hard drive only. They should have put the files into their laptop AND backed them up to the external hard drive. Saving time and a step cost them in the long run.

Lesson learned.

Casting

A hallmark of the bad student film is bad casting choices. A 20-year-old student casts his 21-year-old roommate to play a 40-year-old father, and then he casts his 18-year-old girlfriend to play that character’s daughter. What you have on your hands is a pile of crap, which makes no sense whatsoever. Trust me it happens.

We spend a lot of time searching for the right actor in casting sessions. I believe actors casts themselves in the role. Sometimes you have an idea about the type you want and someone comes into the casting session and does something that completely changes your mind. I like it when that happens.

About 10 years ago right after ER began we were hired by ABC to make a commercial essentially admitting to the viewer that we know you are watching ER on another channel, but when it’s over, please turn to our station for the local news. I wrote a spot where frantic ER doctors were working on an unseen patient. The payoff comes when the doctors hit the patient with the paddles and it comes to life. The “patient” was of course a TV set and they rescued it just in time to see the late news. Genius I know, that’s why I get paid the slightly above average dollars.

At the first round of auditions an actress (full disclosure she is my friend Kristy) came in to read wearing a white lab coat. On action, she took her coat off and put it on backwards, like a surgical gown. It was a brilliant choice on her part and even before she spoke I knew I was going to call her back. We did and sure enough she got the part. This simple move with her coat is what I mean by an actor casting themselves.

So for all of the film students that read this, please take your time casting your films. While your roommate might make an excellent father- in 20 years- look for someone else. If you are making a film about a homeless person, don’t use a real homeless person (and pay him in booze). And if your film features a person on his deathbed, cast an actor; don’t use a real dying man. It will pay off in the long run.

Up in Smoke- part 2

Our first thought was that we probably lost all the film we shot that day and will need to re-shoot- on our dime. Secondly, we needed to get another camera ASAP so we could finish the food shots; third, we needed to check on studio and crew availability. Fourth, get the students out of the studio so it doesn’t look like I was spending all the time with them while an arsonist was having at the camera.

Jim, our producer and I huddled together very quickly and formulated a plan. A new shoot would cost about $30,000. Our insurance deductible is $5,000. We were in a 35K hole. It was interesting because we all acted very calmly and in the moment, but what were we going to say, “This has never happened to us before.” No, it never happened to ANYONE before. We were making bad film history.

We called our camera shop, another 35mm camera was just returned, so we could run over and pick it up. Our actress and most of the crew was free tomorrow if we needed to reshoot. The stage we were on was booked, but we found another one. Except for the rushing sound of our money going down the drain we felt we were in good shape.

As we waited on the new camera we broke for dinner, which for Jim and I meant pacing and worrying. The camera came, we set it up and believe it or not we were pretty much right on schedule. We shot the first food shot, great. We set up for the second shot, turn the camera on and … Nothing. Camera number two is dead. Wile E. Coyote has just run off the cliff for the second time.

We called our camera shop again, it’s 7pm we get their service. The owner calls back and yes, there is another camera, but you can’t record sound. That’s OK, it’s just food shots. P.A.s make another trip to the camera shop. We think we are in OK shape. The camera comes, we set it up and discover another problem.

We had been shooting 1000 foot loads of film. This camera only accepted 400 footers. We had a square peg,round hole deal on our hands. Our assistant cameraman thought he could go into a dark room and break our 1000s into 400s, but he wasn’t certain. Our prop man was shooting a commercial the next day for another company. He said they were shooting 400 footers, let’s get film from them.

8pm. The other company gives us 2-400 foot loads with our promise of replacing them in the morning for their shoot. Camera three is up and running and for the next two hours we knock off food shot after food shot. We call wrap at 10:15- Fifteen minutes past the magic 14 hour mark, We are into a double day. Our crew is cool, though. And realize what we went through and agree to not hit us for going 15 minutes over. (We still blame the agency. The delay in selecting a popcorn bowl cost us probably 30 minutes or more.)

We are not off the hook yet, we need to process the film and see what we lost. We sent it to the lab and the next morning they report it is fine. We only lost a few frames of footage right at the time of the fire. Later we learned that camera had a wiring problem which caused the fire. The second camera had dead batteries. In our rush to get another camera we didn’t check the battery power. We replaced the 400 foot rolls of film and when all was said and done, we paid our $5000 deductible and pretty much broke even on the shoot.

We got a good story out of it though.

Up in Smoke- part 1

So we were shooting a 30-second commercial for Molly McButter. (You know it has BIG butter taste, without a bit of butter fat-says the jingle which the ad agency spent a mint on,) It was a nice spot- live action with an actress and lots of food shots- bite and smiles, plates of food, 35mm film, we were going to do the edit. Nice. To get the job we had to bid it as one 14-hour day, rather than two easy 10-hour days. In the commercial business crew gets paid time and a half from 10-12 hours, double time 12-14 hours and a double day of pay for more than 14 hours.

Things got off to a rocky start because we couldn’t decide on the correct bowl to hold a bowl of popcorn. By “we” of course I mean the ad agency art director. Our stylist had five of everything (the rule of fivesies) and in this case it was probably too many options for the agency. Finally they decided on a bowl and then it took some time to get the popcorn just right. The bowl had to be brimming with perfectly cooked kernels, and the actress had to be able to hold the bowl at an angle to the camera. If you attempt this move at home, your popcorn will be all over the floor, but thanks to movie magic- and a great prop person- we put a ball of clay in the bottom of the bowl and affixed the popcorn to that. Imagine a popcorn wig placed in the bowl and you get the idea.

Once the great popcorn debate was settled (By the way I can hear Jim saying now, “Look it, the agency was supposed to come to the set the night before to pick out props but they didn’t.” True, but I digress.) We were able to shoot. The scenes with the actress went very easily. I had students on the set and we had enough down time that I could really teach as well. It was a good day.

At about 5:00p.m. we wrapped with the actress and had about five hours of food shots to finish. I was across the studio on the telephone when I saw what looked like smoke coming from the camera. “Couldn’t be smoke,” the dumb filmmaker thought to himself it must be steam coming from the food. Just then a production assistant said, “Hey the camera is on fire!” Sure enough flames were shooting out from this $300,000 camera.

You know when Wile E. Coyote runs off the cliff and has that moment in mid-air when he realizes what happened but can’t take it back? That was me. I didn’t really have a frame of reference for how to act when your camera is on fire. So being the Optimist’s son, I walked over to the smoking camera and tried to act as if everything was fine. By the time I got to the camera and saw the soot, I knew things were not fine and we had to shift into plan B (also called panic).
